MUSIC OF POLISH SYNAGOGUES

The Creative Scholarship of the Minister of Culture and National Heritage of the Republic of Poland for 2025 is one of the most important distinctions awarded to artists and creators in Poland – a recognition of their work to date and confidence in their planned creative and research activities.

As part of my scholarship, I carried out an original project entitled "Synagogue Music – A New Repertoire," the aim of which was to discover, arrange, and perform synagogue music associated with Polish synagogues – primarily those in Krakow and Białystok. This repertoire is often forgotten, unpublished, and often known only from fragments of manuscripts stored in scattered collections.

The project aimed not only to preserve and protect the heritage of Jewish music but also to creatively revive it for concert purposes. Thanks to the Ministry's support, I was able to conduct research in international archives, collaborate with outstanding musicians, and organize concerts and events to popularize this unique musical tradition.

This scholarship was a great honor and obligation for me – proof that synagogue music, to which I dedicate my artistic and research work, has significance in contemporary cultural discourse.

1

ARCHIVE QUERY

The first stage of the project was archival research conducted in public and private collections in Poland and abroad. I searched for forgotten synagogue music pieces associated with Polish cities – primarily Krakow and Białystok. This work was based on primary source research, contacts with cultural institutions, and analysis of preserved manuscripts and printed music.

2

ARRANGEMENTS OF WORKS

The rediscovered musical materials often required reconstruction, transcription from manuscripts, and preparation for performance. Each work was subjected to detailed analysis and subsequently arranged with careful attention to its historical and liturgical context. In this process, I collaborated with linguists, music editors, and specialists in Jewish performance practice.

3

REHEARSALS AND CONCERTS

The prepared pieces were then performed in concert spaces. Together with the vocal ensembles and instrumentalists, we worked on their interpretation, respecting tradition while also exploring contemporary means of expression. The concerts took place in venues of particular significance – in Krakow, Białystok, and Szczecin.

PUBLICATION OF THE CATALOGUE

The culmination of the project is the creation of a catalogue of the rediscovered works. It contains essential information on the compositions, their sources and authors, as well as the available notated versions. The catalogue has been made available on this website in order to serve as a tool for researchers, musicians, and all those interested in the heritage of synagogue music.

Archive query

One of the most important elements of my project was archival research aimed at locating and documenting forgotten works of synagogue music that were once composed and performed in the territories of present-day Poland. Over the course of several months, I visited a number of exceptionally valuable and inspiring places, including archives and institutions in Stockholm, Jerusalem, Paris, Warsaw, Berlin, and Vienna. I also conducted remote research in, among others, the collections of Hebrew Union College in Cincinnati—one of the world’s most important repositories of Jewish music.

The works I rediscovered originate from synagogues in Białystok, Włocławek, Poznań, Warsaw, Kraków, Königsberg, Tykocin, Łódź, Częstochowa, Lviv, and many other cities that before the war were vibrant centers of Jewish religious and cultural life. The diversity of the materials is immense—from simple cantorial melodic sketches preserved only as a single melodic line to complete, virtuosic choral-and-organ compositions demanding high technical and musical proficiency from both soloists and vocal ensembles.

During this work, I encountered many kind and deeply committed individuals—directors of institutions, scholars, musicians, librarians, archivists, and specialists from various fields. Their openness, expertise, and willingness to share resources and experience have been an invaluable support to me. This collaboration also demonstrates how important and timely research into the heritage of Jewish music remains, and how much still awaits discovery.

Lecture and concert in Białystok

On June 26, 2025, at the Ludwik Zamenhof Center, I gave a lecture on synagogue music and Białystok's composers and cantors. The following day, on the anniversary of the destruction of the Great Synagogue, we performed works I had discovered related to that city.

New works by Ajzensztadt

On September 5, 2025, during a concert as part of the International Days of Jewish Music, Match Match Ensemble, under the direction of Lilianna Krych, performed two pieces by Dawid Ajzensztadt that I had discovered, thus enriching the repertoire of our long-term project

Music of Krakow's synagogues

On November 16, 2025, a unique concert took place at the Tempel Synagogue in Krakow, featuring works by Eliezer Goldberg, Baruch Kinstler, Boruch Schorr, and Abraham Binbaum, among others. The concert was fully audio and video recorded.
